Synopsis:

This drama with a comic edge is an adaptation of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, set in Hawaii and follows a man in a bit of a mid-life rutt and the lives that revolve around him. His life must come quickly into focus as he is responsible for handling 2 looming and very important family matters.

Review:

The Descendants mood and main heart is quickly set with a fantastic opening monologue delivered by Matt King the lead character of this piece played so brilliantly by George Clooney. He describes how so many people think living in Hawaii is such paradise for everyone with a mix of vacation clichés involving sun, sand and fancy drinks; but he notes cynically how he personally hasn’t touched a surfboard in years.

We watch Matt & those around him deal with two compelling main journeys. Both of these journeys are spiritual and difficult which while under the fantastic direction of Alexander Payne unfold so naturally; but eventually collide. At the start of the film, Matt’s world is turned upside down by a tragedy that is deeply painful and challenging experienced along with his two daughters played sharply by the beautiful Shailene Woodley as Alexandra King and precociously by the adorable Amara Miller as Scottie King. In addition to this intimate family drama, Matt has also been entrusted with a huge looming decision as the Trustee of his extended family fortune; a decision which will not only impact his entire family but everyone on the island.

Matt King is the driving force behind this film. He is a relatable, hard working, overwhelmed husband and father who’s gotten lost in the details of making a living; thereby like so many of us, neglecting far more important matters closer to home. He’s under pressure from all sides and is being pummeled by and having to bob and weave around new bombshells along the way. Matt inspires me. He’s flawed as we all are but he’s smart, funny, fiery, compassionate and a little bit obsessive at times. Most people if presented with Matt’s situation would be purely reactive and impetuous. I loved that at almost every turn, he took action but just cautiously enough allowing each layer for the viewer to satisfyingly unfold. Sayings like, “Don’t rush to get it wrong” and “Some things are better left unsaid” both come to mind. Ultimately, Matt’s just a good guy who wants to do what he thinks is right and not hurt anyone in the process.

The Descendants may well be the vehicle by which George will garner his first Academy award win. I hope so! Last year I was so… rooting for him to win for his Oscar nominated performance in “Up In The Air”, but he lost the statuette to Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart”. I was never drawn to George like most every other woman on the planet until I saw “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”. It was then that I saw not only his wit and bravado; but his intelligence and venerability which he took to another level in “Up In The Air” and now, while his performance in The Descendants is a much more subtle, quirky and heartbreaking performance; George, once again shows his comedic prowess, likeability and dramatic range. Go George Go!

The Descendants is fast paced and forward moving even during the slower more dramatic moments as the dialogue, performances and direction build tension and hold your attention from scene to scene. One of my favorite movies ever is Sideways directed by Alexander Payne and Mr. Payne brings the same honest, quirky and natural touch to The Descendants. What both movies contain in their characters and journey is a bit of unpredictability. Like real life, sometimes usually predictable people behave in a way that might be uncharacteristic to them as they get pushed to the edge. As The Descendants unfolded I was rooting these characters on to do or say something that perhaps the average person might not do or say and to my enjoyment they did. As people in modern society we try so hard to be well behaved; but because we’re flawed, we sometimes snap and that makes for a perfect comedy without feeling forced or over the top.

While the script is so well written, I was wondering if some viewers may be offended by the language from the younger characters. In terms of “modern” language I can tell you that my younger and very intelligent teenage family members sometimes do speak offensively, mirroring what’s around them. It just is what it is and as I got further into the film this started to feel less repellent.

One of the more enjoyable supporting characters is Sid played by Nick Krause. He’s kinda just plopped into the framework in a strange way as Alexandra’s friend from school. He almost annoyed me the viewer as much as he did Alexandra’s dad (Matt); but he provides some nice comic moments and eventually grew on me. Towards the end, my Sid experience was a tad ruined by a dramatic scene with Matt and Sid wherein the script (I feel) tries awkwardly to explain by way of digging a little bit into Sid’s character why he might fit into Alexandra’s life at this time. It was a bit too little too late in the film, as I would have rather Sid had just stayed the juvenile and strange friend we know little about who slipped into the film in an odd manner. This however, is the only flaw I found with this film; hardly enough to still not rave about it.

There are also small but strong performances by Matthew Lillard (nice to see him in an adult role), Judy Greer and veteran actors like: Robert Forster and Beau Bridges.

Two stand out lines from the movie for me were:

“Go ahead and sue me – it will bring us closer together!”

&

(In regards to money) – “Give our children enough to do something but not so much as to do nothing!”

Music: Of course being a singer-songwriter I always notice the score and source music which often times is like an additional character. Music once again here plays such a big part in setting the mood and helping establish the location of this film with so many beautiful Hawaiian songs. Congratulations to the wonderfully talented Daniel Ho for his performance with Ozzie Kotani on the song Paka Uawhich is featured in the movie and the movie soundtrack.

Quite a few of the more intimate scenes paralleled my life a lil’ too closely and so my experience with a small handful of scenes included a couple big sighs, quiet sobs and wet cheeks. Bring some tissue or a long sleeve shirt with you just in case.

It will make you laugh and cry. Don’t miss this wonderful movie with moving performances!

Obsession:
My love of dance and choreographing goes back to when I was very little. Of all the arts, dance, is the closest to my heart. So, I was naturally drawn this show! I’ve watched almost every episode of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), only missing a few from the first season. The first season was pretty good but boy did it take off after that and every season the dancer’s get better and better. I watch a lot of entertainment reality shows but this show by far, has the best example of talent. Sure you get the audition process with all it’s funny bits and “not so brilliant” dancing; but boy do you ever get the most amazing stuff too! In addition to the great dancing there are some amazing choreographers like the stunning Mia Michaels (M.I.A. so far this year, miss her), Wade Robson, Sonya Tayeh, Nappytabs, Stacey Tookey, Mandy Moore Desmond Richardson & Travis Wall (former SYTYCD finalist) just to name a few. Plus you get to hear fantastic music synched with the routines and often live performances from the musical artists themselves.

I hope one or more of these videos touch and inspire you as they have me and so many others!

On my wish list is to have one or more of my songs from my forthcoming new album “Gloss” or my forthcoming EP with Shotgun Radio used in synch with choreography on So You Think You Can Dance! That would be so incredible! A girl can dream right! I’m getting misty just thinking about it!

I’m going to now let these short but beautiful videos speak for themselves. See links and brief descriptions below. I’m of course watching this season! We’re going on the 3rd show and I already have some fav individual dancers as well as a favorite couple as you’ll see below. Go Melanie and Marko!

Synopsis:

Super 8 is a thriller/sci-fi/drama directed by J.J. Abrams and set in the summer of 1979 in a small town in Ohio. The main characters are kids; all newcomers with the exception of Alice (played by Elle Fanning, Dakota’s lil’ sis) with big imaginations, and dreams of making a zombie movie. The tone is innocent as the kids navigate the usual growing up stuff until that is, the big train crash. Immediately after, strange things start happening and the whole town is turned upside down.

Review:

In the beginning of the movie you are dropped into a house filled with people morning the loss of a central character. The cause and effect of this early demise will create an immense weight on the lives of young Joe (played by Joel Courtney) and his dad, Jackson who is also town deputy (played by Kyle Chandler).

The first thing that struck me (because it’s so well done), was how I was trying to guess the time period in which this movie is set; but soon all is revealed a little at a time by the clothes they wear, the dialogue, the slang, the overall tone and the absolutely best part, the music!

As you meet the kids, it’s clear that they are bonded together tightly by their adventurous spirit, collective talents and their love of movie making with their Super 8 video camera. They are a mixed bag of boys and one very pretty and inspiring budding actress named Alice; who also has access to a car I especially love Charles (played by Riley Griffiths) who is the writer and director of the kids forthcoming Zombie feature. One fateful night while shooting an inspired scene, the train accident happens which causes the kids to literally scatter and run for their lives. As the kids collected themselves, they realized they just witnessed something the likes of which can never be spoken of.

Over the next few days, the small town starts to experience strange occurrences and disappearances causing fear and paranoia amongst the townfolk. In time, the kids who know more then the adults will bravely play a big role in what’s to come.

One of my favorite scenes involves Joe, Alice & an emotional mystery that is fully revealed while watching an old home movie clip together. The way J.J. Abrams (blocked) i.e.; physically placed his characters in the scene combined with the simple honest dialogue exchange was so touching.

Abrams did a great job building suspense from start to finish. As with all thrillers, he knows that it’s often what you don’t see or how the audience is teased leading to a big reveal, that is far more effective then showing your whole hand up front.

This film is heartwarming and lovingly nostalgic. The Climatic ending was magical, exciting and left some of us audience members misty eyed and clapping. This was a pretty near perfect movie. Definitely a damn satisfying experience.

It also felt like a bit of an homage to the 2 “Steves”. That is, Spielberg’s “ET” and King’s “Stand By Me”. I didn’t feel however that I was watching a remake or a copy. I recently saw a Super 8 critic (I don’t remember which one) that said of this film, “An instant classic”! I heartily agree!

Bravo Mr. Abrams!

See it on the BIG screen for sure! In theaters now.

Synopsis:

Written and directed by Woody Allen who breathes new life into a genre which as of late has become a bit of a yawn fest; that genre being, the Romantic Comedy. Gil, a successful screenwriter (played by Owen Wilson) who wants very much to try his hand at writing his first novel and Inez (played by Rachel McAdams), are supported by a large fantastic cast notably; Michael Sheen, Corey Stoll, Alison Pill, Kathy Bates & Marion Cotillard.

Review:

This film came at such a wonderful time for me, being that it’s just a few months after my return from Paris. It was my first time visiting Paris, so seeing the sites again in this film made me long to return there.

The film’s opening montage is dialogue free and lasts for what seems like 4 to 5 minutes of shot after shot of Paris in all her splendor. You see landmark after landmark and cafes to cobblestones underscored by a joyful jazz piece. Soon after this we’re introduced to Gil and Inez taking in the sites. Gil is thrilled about being in Paris and exclaims that he loves every nook and cranny of the city, the dirt, and most of all the history. You soon learn that all is not perfect in Gil and Inez’s relationship. Gil mentions to Inez that he would even love Paris in the rain; any city in the rain. Inez exclaims, “Why does every city have to be in the rain?” They’re in Paris, engaged to be married and should be in synch one would assume; but there are demands on their attentions, a competition really. Inez’s competition is Paris and Gil’s need to fulfill his passions. Gil’s competition is everything else in Inez’s life; her parents, conversations about how to furnish the soon to be married couple’s future house in Malibu and Inez’s handsome old friend from college named Paul (played by Michael Sheen), who is currently lecturing at The Sorbonne.

As the story continues, Gil with his easy going nature tries to spend time with Inez and her parents but longs to venture more into the city without the companionship of Inez’s college pal, Paul. One night Gil finally gets his wish when Inez once again, opts to be escorted by Paul to further see the Paris sites. Inez in a flip tone, invites Gil to join them but Gil bows out and chooses instead to take a leisurely stroll of Paris by night alone. It’s this magical walk that changes the course of Gil’s future. Gil meets some strangers and is whisked away to the kind of Paris he had only imagined; the kind of Paris that harkens to days gone by when conversations were lively and filled with mentions of poetry, prose, music, art, adventure and brimming over with the most interesting people who had strong opinions with the pedigrees and experiences to back them up. The women were lovely, yet exciting and full of moxey. The men were a mix of refinement, angst and swagger. As the evening continued, Gil felt artistically reinvigorated and more alive then ever. Unlike being with his fiance, it was at last refreshing to be surrounded by people who took a genuine interest in him and his passion for writing and the arts. As he left to return to his hotel, he was already anticipating a possible future rendevous with his new friends; and so he did see them again, night after night. His nightly visits excited, inspired and enlightened him. He couldn’t believe his fortune which was surreal yet very real!

Inez and Gil’s days and eventually nights, were spent in the company of others, so you can probably guess somewhat how this plot is going to end. The ending was the one thing that was very predictable but I didn’t care because it made me so blissfully happy!

Overall however, it was nice to be surprisingly swept away into a fantasy world of unpredictability; even though over the course of the movie the structure of the unpredictable became more predictable (did I just say that)? Nevertheless, I looked forward to every minute of it! “Midnight In Paris” was a feast of surprises. One might say, “A Moveable Feast!”

Kudos to Owen Wilson! Who knew….I have to say I watched him at first thinking of Owen the person and his real life drama; but thankfully I very quickly became absorbed in his character which he played so effortlessly and endearingly. I was for the first time quite charmed by him.

“Midnight In Paris” is enchanting, romantic and humorous with relatable characters. There is fine acting, wit, charm, whimsy, magic and hope. It has the power to perhaps make you ponder about what really makes you happy. If you were Gil, would you take the same chances? Would you remain in comfortable yet painful denial or would you move forward? Is the grass always greener and how bout watering your own lawn for a change!

In theaters now! See it!!

Intro

Reading this title you might be thinking, everyone completes what? As the movie starts, words scroll across the screen and you read something like….. there’s a scientific breakthrough that will extend human life 100 years! Great; but as the movie plays on you’ll be asking yourself, at what cost?

Movie Review

“Never Let Me Go” is set in an English boarding school named Hailsham, run by a very stern head mistress named Miss Emily (Charlotte Rampling) and set against a stark and pale landscape. This all seems common enough; as it is England. Yet, these visuals help set the tone that director, Mark Romanek carefully builds throughout this film.

In the beginning we meet 3 kids (pre-teens), who we later get to know as teens and young adults played by Ruth (Keira Knightly), Kathy (Carey Mulligan) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield). They’re just trying to fit in as all kids do, pushing their boundaries while discovering all the things you can’t do at this very unique school; like, leave the school grounds. It’s the bond that’s formed between these 3 kids and later as adults that’s so compelling to experience; while you are gracefully guided by the narration of the character Kathy.

All the kids soon learn that this school isn’t what it seems; yet, they are consistently assured that they have all been chosen for the privilege of passing on their very special gifts to the world and that they must be diligent in caring for themselves in every way.

The middle of the film finds some of the students living on a rural farm and with the change of location they are more and more curious about life outside their schooling. By now, the friendship of the 3 main characters is fully complicated by the rage of the hormones between them; as they experience jealousy, manipulation, lust, betrayal, abandonment, loneliness and fear.

The end of the movie is set in various healthcare facilities and one last trip to the outside world.

Each character is so well acted, directed and deal with the release of their feelings in their own unique way. Their faults and/or their virtues are so strong, that it leads the viewer to feel very deeply for them. Watching this movie for me, was comparable in it’s depth to reading an amazing novel. In fact, this movie was based on the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro.

That being said, I almost didn’t want to care about the characters as it was difficult to watch what they were going through. Each layer that unfolded was harder and harder to witness as the inevitable came nearer. The very effective doom I felt from the start, that builds throughout, is perhaps partly due to the stereotypical British reserve coupled with the palpable buildup of emotions in these performances.

This ethical/drama/romance story leaves you to ponder some big questions. Do we give, say, do enough? Do we appreciate what we have? Is there ever enough time? What is it to be human?

I ultimately love this movie not only for what was said and seen, but for what was not.

Make the time, open your heart, your tissue box and see it!

In this edition of jaen’s refrain you’ll find:

Album Review

I’m so excited to say that this is my first “official” blog about a musical album. Those of you who know me, know that I love all kinds of music but I often tend to be drawn towards the darker side of various genres; especially in the Rock and Electronic category.

However, no matter what the mood or style, what always draws me in to a song is the melody. “Melody is king” I always say. A couple of months ago, a super talented photographer friend of mine Jared Platt, turned me on to Mindy’s music. He just knew I would love her and insisted that I listen on the spot. So, caught up in Jared’s enthusiasm I put on my headphones, plugged into his i-Phone and was immediately captivated by everything about this artist and this song. She had me after the first verse and by the time I finished the first hook, I knew I had to hear more.

When I returned home, I opened up my i-Tunes and checked out Mindy’s past songs. Her past songs are all well done; but to me, she was just gearing up comfortably and so naturally to “Anchor” down for her current opus.

After previewing a handful of songs I decided it was the album “Anchor” that I had to have. After just one listen to each song, I put her music on my i-Phone, i-Pod, i-Mac and my laptop. Yes, it’s Apple too! Her music is sonically lovely even compressed down to the smallest of mp3’s. Ultimately, I burned a cd copy for my car in full sound quality audio, old school though it may be cuz damn it, that’s how well produced and performed music should be heard!

Voice: Mindy’s voice is pure, lilting, warm and sweet but not saccharin. If you like the loveliness of Marketa Irglova (heard & starring in the fantastic movie “Once”) or Kat Parsons an incredible L.A. Cali talent (who also makes me so happy,) you will probably love Mindy’s performance on “Anchor”.

Lyrics: Her lyrics are so visual e.g.; “Walk on a wire, jump through a fire for you. Hang from my knees on a trapeze while you make me spin. Yes, you make me twirl like a circus girl.” The lyrics on this album are simple, but smart and relatable without being too sappy. Okay, maybe some might consider some of her lines sappy; but I don’t fricken care cause they make me so…happy. Sure, I love my provocative, spooky, shocking, sexy art ; but I want my Disney too! Cuz, it’s all about balance people, balance!

Melody: Seriously, I do believe while she was writing this album, she breathed in Oxygen and breathed out unforgettable melodies; tons of them.

Production: It’s classic and not over-produced.

The songs: I love them all; but if I had to highlight a few for sampling, here goes:

I Do Adore – This song makes me deliriously happy. Maybe it’s the ukulele, maybe it’s the killer good chorus, maybe it’s the tempo, maybe it’s cuz it’s just so foot-tapping and singable. I heart!!

Anchor (title cut) – I’m a sucker for a waltz time. I love the beautiful visuals. It’s a warm & lovely ballad. Her voice is perfect here. It’s lilting; but plaintive, not weak.

All The Pennies – Musically upbeat and whimsically positive with another fantastic and memorable chorus!

Hourglass – This song makes me sway with a peaceful smile. It taps into the innocent kid in me. It makes me hopeful.

All About Your Heart – Fresh and everlasting love theme. This song encompasses a lil’ bit of all that’s good about each one of the songs on Anchor.

This album is a perfect example of why there are still those of us, who while we do and will continue to purchase mp3 singles; are still so excited to purchase an album of songs. Yes, kids an album is not an old scratchy, dusty, melted piece of black round vinyl with a small hole and ridges that your folks used to listen to; it’s a collection of songs. It’s a journey that takes you on a ride and allows you to experience true artistry and not just a spoonful of ice cream over the counter; but the whole damn ice cream cone. In the case of the album “Anchor” I’d say it compares to my favorite Pistachio Gelato from Italy.

I’m far too often worried bout’ what other’s think of me; but when I hear Mindy’s up-tempo songs, I just wanna dance in a way that’s not at all “cool”; that is so full of abandon like little kids do.

Mindy’s album got me through counting receipts in prep for this year’s taxes. Yes taxes; a task that I do not enjoy. I just kept it on repeat, sang along, invented harmonies and plodded through my spreadsheet until it was done. Thanks Mindy!

Ultimately, these tunes are positive slices of life about the people we know and love. I dare you to hold a clenched fist while listening to this album!

As Mindy’s song “All About Your Heart” says, “If you were an ice cream flavor, you would be my favorite one”. Well Mindy, this is and I’m sure will remain, one of the most beloved albums in my music collection.

Never has human intestines come in so handy as well as other parts of the body. Cell phone anyone. Eh hem… In Machete, almost no body part, violent gratuity or Mexican generalization is spared. It all plays out in a hearty wink with the lead character Machete (played by Danny Trejo) carrying out his own brand of justice.

This movie was exactly what I expected and more. It’s campy and exciting. It’s gritty and sexy. It’s Oh so very, Robert Rodriguez.

I’m always excited to see the same actors show up in Mr. Rodriguez’s films; notably Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin and I have to mention Tom Savini (makeup & special FX wizard). They’re like old friends that I can rely on to always draw me in to the fantasy. It’s especially cool to see Danny Trejo play a lead role. I have to admit I wasn’t sure if Danny could carry this film; but carry it he did, all the way across the border and back again. Danny has been cutting his teeth on his many characters working alongside Robert Rodriguez leading up to his sharpest role yet with Machete.

I love that Robert’s female characters are kick-ass but always feminine e.g.; Michelle Rodriguez.

The additional casting in this movie is entertaining and often clever. Take for instance the choice of Lyndsay Lohan as April Booth.

Oh, and I have to mention the music which is like a character in this movie. It helps to fuel this crazy ride. It’s almost always dramatic and ranges from a kinda Spaghetti Western gone wild to sensual and rhythmic Latin World to classic Mexican to driving Rock with a spicy flair!!

In certain circumstances, too much “just because” carnage can turn me off; but like most people, I’ve become a bit desensitized to blood and guts on the big and small screen. To be sure, this is a very graphic movie; but, this movie has a solid story, bad guys to boo, “good” guys to root for, inventiveness and style for days. Plus, the stunts and special FX are crazy good! It’s just fricken fun! I laughed out loud many times and remain nightmare free.

As Machete drew to a close I was thinking; there has to be a sequel and how can I be a part of it? I’m a hot Latin chick, singer-songwriter with a flair for the dramatic! Hey Robert , call me!!!
